Overview

This guide provides detailed step-by-step directions on how to use any video file to create a CD-R/CD-RW that can be played on any PC or stand-alone console DVD player (depending on DVD player compatibility) by using the VCD format.

What is VCD?

VCD (Video CD) is a standard for creating video onto CD-R/CD-RW discs. It functions much like a DVD but with a slightly lower quality, particularly when there is fast movement in the video, such as action scenes. Additionally, since a CD-R/CD-RW has a smaller capacity than a DVD you can only store a maximum of 80 minutes of VCD video onto a single 700MB CD-R. However, even with these limitations VCD has a wide range of uses. It is excellent for copying home movies created on VHS or 8mm, or copying video files downloaded from the internet, to a format that you can share and play on a stand-alone DVD player.

How It Works

This guide provides in-depth instructions on how to convert your video to VCD using the following process.

  1. Uses TMPG Enc to convert your video files into a DVD compatible format using the VCD format.
  2. Uses TMPG Enc to merge multiple video files into one large file or to cut large files into smaller ones.
  3. Uses Nero (recommended) to burn the video file(s) onto a DVD compatible CD-R/CD-RW using the VCD format.
