Convert VHS tapes to VCD

The VCD format it perfect for converting your VHS or 8mm tapes to a format playable on your stand-alone DVD player. Use the following steps to help you complete this process.

Note: There are many different versions of recording software bundled with TV Tuner and TV-in video cards. The examples in this portion of the guide are written based on the ATI TV Player 2.0 software used with the ATI TV Wonder PCI TV Tuner card. Your hardware and software may be different. Consult your TV Tuner or TV-in manual for further directions.

  1. Connect your VHS player to your TV Tuner or TV-in video card. Note: If supported, it is recommended you connect your VHS player in a manner that enables simultaneous video and audio recording such as connecting the player to your TV Tuner card via the coax cable connector. Consult your TV Tuner or TV-in manual for further directions on how to accomplish this.
  2. Set your recording software video input settings to match the physical input you connected your VHS player to.

  1. Set the Frame Rate to 29.97 (NTSC) for creating all North American movies, only choose 25.0 (PAL) for encoding non-North American movies.
  2. Set the Dimension (or resolution) as high as possible but no less than 352x240 (NTSC) for creating all North American movies, or no less than 352x288 (PAL) for encoding non-North American movies. Note: These are the dimensions for VCD video.
  3. Set the video compression to YUYV or RGB (uncompressed) if possible. If this is not available, select MPEG2 or MPEG1 and then set the video bit rate as high as possible but no less than 1150 kbits/sec.

  1. Set your Audio Capture to 44,100 KHz 16bit Stereo. Note: Always use 44,100 KHz when recording your audio to ensure the compatibility with the VCD conversion.
  2. Record your VHS tape with your video recording software.
  3. When the recording is completed, use the rest of this guide to convert and burn your video to VCD.

Congratulations! You have copied your VHS video. Once encoded (coverted) to VCD your video will be playable on any PC that has a VCD player installed or on any stand alone DVD player that is VCD compatible.
